Reduction of the amount of organic trace elements in the Ruhr by additional treatment steps at municipal waste water treatment plants

On behalf of the ministry of environment, the Institute of Environmental Engineering of the RWTH Aachen University and the IWW- the North Rhine-Westphalia Institute for Water Research, Mülheim/Ruhr have investigated in an extensive study the trace elements in the river Ruhr and the ways to reduce the entry of trace elements into the Ruhr by measures at waste water treatment plants. The study confirms that an acute need for action on waste water treatment plants in the Ruhr catchment area itself does not exist. At the same time, the study shows the results that medium- and long-term needs for action can not be excluded, the precise determination, however, requires further investigations.
